Operations Normal at Norman Manley Airport

Director of Aviation Security, Lieutenant Commander John McFarlane, has assured that operations at Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) are running smoothly and normally.
“Flight operations are normal here. A couple of airlines have cancelled their night flights, but the day flights are running normally,” Lt. Commander McFarlane told JIS News, today (May 26).
“We anticipate that the situation should return to full normality by tomorrow (May 27), because of the control that is taking place on the streets,” he added.
However, he advised that a number of airlines have cancelled their night flights out of concern for the comfort of their outgoing and incoming passengers.
“For the time being we know that American Airlines have cancelled their flight that normally comes in at about 7:30/8:00 P.M. Air Jamaica has also cancelled their Flight 36 that comes in from Fort Lauderdale at that time, otherwise the other flights are progressing normally,” the Director advised.
British Airways (BA) has also advised that customers holding a BA ticket to and from Kingston and are due travel in the next 72 hours are being asked to rebook on an available BA flight to the same destination, to travel within five days.
“If the same booking class is not available, the lowest class available in the same cabin may be booked,” the airline said.
This will be at no additional cost to the customer, and if required, the validity of the ticket may be extended.
The airline has also recommended that customers can also rebook to the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James.
“Customers who are part way through their journey can rebook onto the next available BA flight back to their original location or leave earlier to continue their journey,” the advisory said.
Meanwhile, Lt. Commander McFarlane has pointed out that the police have advised that the major corridor routes to the Norman Manley International Airport are open and are being maintained safely. “So, getting to and from the airport is really not a problem, along the main corridors,” he said.
The Director further said that concerned passengers or their family members are being asked to contact their airlines to ascertain information on flight cancellations.
