Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, is imploring land surveyors to render assistance to the country’s landless poor.
“I need not tell you how important a title is to a Jamaican and I implore you, not only to be mindful of that fact, but to do your utmost to assist the vulnerable among us,” he urged.
Minister Pickersgill was addressing the handing over of certificates of commissioning to two new land surveyors at his New Kingston offices on September 2.
The two new surveyors, Andy Jackson and Glen Watson, bring the number of certified practicing land surveyors, who are members of the Land Surveyors Association of Jamaica, to 101.
Mr. Pickersgill said land surveyors have a key role to play in sustainable development.
He said the physical data they gather is critical for the assessment and evaluation of the impacts of climate change and to inform development planning.
“With climate change, there is likely to be more land slippage and flooding as storms intensify. As such, the physical layout of dormitory, commercial, industrial and agricultural communities will change. The role of the land surveyor will play a major role in the roadmap towards sustainable development,” he said.
