The Full Story
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has resumed service on a phased basis in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR), following the threat of Hurricane Matthew.
The company resumed operations at 5:00 a.m. today (October 4) and steadily increased the number of buses dispatched in the Corporate Area from 100 at 6:00 a.m. to 157 at 8:00 a.m.
Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations at the JUTC, Kirk Finnikin, told JIS News that the company worked closely with the relevant agencies and authorities to do the necessary groundwork before resuming operations.
“In anticipating that there would be a demand for the service to be restored as quickly as possible, we did reconnaissance activities up to 11 last night (Monday) to verify that the roadways would be in good condition for buses to carry our passengers safely,” he explained.
“We simultaneously called out the team to provide limited service, anticipating good news, so that we could respond quickly after being given the go-ahead,” he continued.
Mr. Finnikin said that throughout the day there has been a steady increase in demand and that the company will be dispatching more buses on a route-by-route basis as the demand increases, to ensure that people can get to their destinations.
