Jamaica has been selected to receive the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council President Certificate.
This disclosure was made by the Director General of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA), Mr. Nari Williams-Singh during an official tour of the Norman Manley International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower on April 19.
The Director General informed the gathering that Jamaica is a recipient of the certificate due to “our significant oversight performance for 2016.”
“Of the 192 countries which are signatories to the ICAO conventions, 12 are selected each year for this recognition,” he added, underscoring the significance of the certificate.
Mr. Williams-Singh congratulated the staff of the JCAA and Aeronautical Telecommunications Ltd. (AEROTEL) who, he said, continue to do an excellent job in maintaining the high standards of the authority.
He also made specific reference to the recently commissioned air traffic control tower which is a large part of the JCAA’s ongoing modernisation and upgrading programme. “As we see here today, the industry’s development and success are also fuelled by continuous technological innovation processes, such as this tower – and all these efforts are championed through dedication and vigilance from our energetic teams,” he said.
He added that the success of Jamaica’s air traffic services has been a result of the combination of heart, training and dedication.
Meanwhile, Mr. Williams-Singh said even though the air travel industry is a complex one, “its seamless and safe operation is driven and sustained by the vigilant implementation and unfailing application of stringent, yet dynamic standards.”
“It is this culmination which Jamaica has continuously employed to maintain the safe, expeditious and orderly flow of air traffic across Jamaica’s airspace, in accordance with the Standards and Recommended Practices of our global governing body, ICAO,” he explained.
