The Government will continue to communicate with key stakeholders in the United States regarding the recent Executive Orders on immigration and travel signed by President of the United States, Donald Trump.
This was noted by Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, during yesterday’s (February 1) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House in St. Andrew.
“The Government is aware of the concern, we are on top of it and we are talking to our key partners within the State Department and across the Diaspora,” he said.
Senator Reid encouraged Jamaicans to stay calm, adding that the Government will continue to provide information on topical issues which concern the citizens of the country.
“As far as we are concerned, there is no more information than what is already out there, that there is no direct impact on Jamaica at this moment and we don’t think we should escalate it and (create) panic,” he said.
Earlier this week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, said the Ministry is making every effort to ascertain the scope of the Executive Orders.
“It is important that we not conflate them, because there is more than one Order and they deal with entirely different things. I would ask the Jamaican community overseas and the public to remain calm and to be assured that the Ministry is examining these issues,” she said in the statement.
President Trump’s most recent Executive Order focused on immigration and restricted travel from seven countries, including: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
