During an Earthquake
January 11, 2017The Full Story
The effects of an earthquake can be minimised if you take the right action. Here are some things to do during an earthquake.
- Firstly and most importantly, remain calm.
- If you panic, you are more likely to suffer injuries and those around you will be less likely to remain calm. Do not take any action without first considering the consequences.
If you are indoors…
- Stand in a strong doorway or get under a sturdy desk or table and hold on. Watch for falling objects, such as bricks, light fixtures and broken plaster.
- Stay away from windows and mirrors.
- Do not rush outside.
- Do not attempt to use elevators as the power may have failed.
- If you are inside a crowded building, such as a theatre, stadium or store, do not rush for an exit, as many others will do the same. Choose your exit carefully and avoid objects if you must go outside.
If you are outdoors…
- Try to stay away from high buildings, walls, poles, and other structures that may fall.
- Avoid fallen power lines.
- If possible, go to an open area away from all such hazards, but do not run through the streets.
- If you are in a vehicle, stop in the safest place possible space (an open area), and remain inside.
