UTech Students’ Union Council’s Teach the Youth
The Full Story
The University of Technology (UTech) Students’ Union Council’s annual Summer outreach project, Teach the Youth, is off to a good start with the enrolment of more than 600 students from five Kingston and St. Andrew communities.
The project, which operates summer classes at select locations in the communities of August Town, Kintyre, Tavern, Highlight View and Sandy Park, got underway on Monday (July 13), and will end on Friday, July 31.
The 17-year-old community service initiative targets students between four and 20 years of age, and is run by volunteers from UTech, Jamaica Values and Attitudes Project (Jam Vat) and the National Youth Service.
This year’s programme was launched recently at the Technology Innovation Centre, UTech, under the theme: ‘Unleash Your Potential… Empowered for Greatness.
Lessons are delivered in core disciplines including English, Mathematics, and Information Technology. The programme also involves motivational sessions and personal development tutorials in areas such as entrepreneurship, leadership and career development.
Among the immediate goals of the programme is basic literacy for the younger enrollees, while the older participants are expected to be able to fill out forms and write job applications at the end of the period.
The activities will culminate with a Sports Day on the UTech campus where participants from all five communities will compete and the top students awarded.
The sponsors include the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), Digicel, Island Road Trio, Lasco, Reggae Jammin, Uncommon Arts, Jamaica Values and Attitudes Project, FAME FM, IWatch Campus, IGL, COK Sodality Credit Union, Appliance Traders, and Jamaica Producers.
