Lovers of the world-famous Devon House ‘I Scream’ can now enjoy their favourite treat in a more spacious and comfortable setting.
On Tuesday (July 25), Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, officially opened the expanded parlour located at the north lawns of the Devon House property.
The approximately 5,000 square feet facility, built through $28 million in funding from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), allows for more patrons to be comfortably accommodated eliminating the long lines, which characterised the previous facility.
Minister Bartlett said the upgraded parlour, for which ground was broken in June 2016, has “more beauty and creature comforts for guests.”
He noted that the project is part of ongoing renovations of the Devon House property to improve the tourism product.
Devon House, which boasts a number of eateries, is to play a central role in Jamaica’s gastronomy tourism thrust.
“A few weeks ago we launched the gastronomy centre of the Caribbean at Devon House…we have plans to marry this with other culinary delights from the region and to ensure that when you leave here, you will remember all the wonderful delicacies…of our people,” he said.
In her remarks, Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange, commended the Board of Directors of Devon House for undertaking the expansion project.
“I welcome this new expanded ice-cream parlour and the general developments that have been taking place at Devon House. I look forward to this place becoming one of the main locations for authentic Jamaican foods,” she said.
She noted that food represents a tremendous opportunity to showcase Jamaica and is “big business as more people travel for that experience.”
Ms. Grange said the Ministry will be working closely with the Tourism Ministry to showcase the country’s cuisine.
Former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Edward Seaga, who was integral in saving Devon House from demolition in 1965 as Information and Culture Minister, urged the protection and care of the facility.
Mr. Seaga expressed elation at the development projects being undertaken and commended the Tourism Minister for his foresight.
For her part, Managing Director of Scoops Unlimited, Carol Clarke-Webster, said Devon House ‘I Scream’ is one of the best products Jamaica and the Caribbean have produced.
She said her company shares the vision for Devon House as a gastronomy hub.
Scoops Unlimited is the manufacturer of the Devon House ‘I Scream.’
