The Full Story
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has launched an investigation into occurrences at its disposal sites. The NSWMA says fires have been lit at five disposal sites over the past two months. The public cleansing agency says it clearly suggests arson.
“We are extremely concerned that unscrupulous persons, whether coordinated on their own could be sabotaging our efforts at the NSWMA. These fires are very costly on the taxpayers plus they compromise air quality and thereby threaten the health of our people,” said Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the NSWMA.
The Executive Director added that: “We are urging persons to desist from these practices and instead partner with us as we seek to transform the NSWMA.”
A meeting has been scheduled with the Police High Command regarding this development.
“We will be working with the police, the army and anyone who can help us identify and bring those responsible to books. Meanwhile, we will continue to cover our landfill and do our best to secure same,” said Gordon.
The five disposal sites affected are:
- Retirement, St. James
- Myersville, St. Elizabeth
- Hadden, Moneague, St. Ann
- Doctors Wood, Buff Bay, Portland
- Riverton, St. Andrew
