Young People in Eastern St. Catherine to Benefit from Skills Training

Approximately 250 young people from communities in Eastern St. Catherine are to benefit from skills training and certification through the HEART Trust/NTA and private institutions.

The training will be provided in areas such as plumbing, masonry, carpentry, electrical, information technology, and hospitality.

“This will create greater opportunity for them to become employable, even outside of Jamaica,” said Member of Parliament for the area, Denise Daley, during her contribution to the 2013/2014 Sectoral Debate on Wednesday, June 26, in the House of Representatives.

The training will be conducted at the Windsor Heights Centre, which was renovated with resources from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Miss Daley informed that the centre was equipped with 25 computers through collaboration with private partners.

Meanwhile, three early childhood institutions were outfitted with items of furniture, stoves, and notice boards, while 300 students from primary and secondary schools are benefitting from four homework centres set up in the constituency.

The centres are located at Jones Avenue in Twickenham Park, the old Railway Station, Dela Vega City and Greendale.

“A total of 56 computers were supplied to these centres. I must thank the private donors, who work in partnership with us,” Miss Daley said.

Also under the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP), a computer laboratory will be built in Greendale at a cost of $3 million, for which ground breaking will take place shortly.
