YOU mentors complete training course

November 22, 2010

The Full Story

Six Jamaicans, who have completed a mentoring programme facilitated by Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU), will receive certificates at an awards ceremony scheduled for tomorrow (November 23), at the Jamaica Pegasus, in Kingston.
Presenters who have also trained mentors over the years will be honoured for their contribution to the programme.
Guest speaker is Group Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Money Market Brokers Limited (JMMB), Keith Duncan.
Executive Director of YOU, Georgia Scott, told JIS News that the mentors participated in a two-day training course on October 23 and 24.
“We do recognise that there are a number of areas that we have to cover to be able to help the mentors to be quite confident in what they are taking on,” she said, adding that quarterly workshops are held for mentors and mentees to guide and assist them in various areas of their development.
Mrs. Scott said that currently, there are some 200 mentors and mentees who are active in the programme.
“To date we have trained over 1,400 mentors and we have trained over 40 organisations to set up their mentoring programmes,” she added.
She noted that the programme requires a lot of work in order to maintain the relationships between mentors and their mentees.
The Executive Director said the organisation is seeking more male mentors to participate in the programme.
YOU is a Jamaican Mentoring organisation which links caring adults with young people in a supervised programme fostering the provision of care guidance, positive role models, emotional support and counseling.
