The Full Story

A one-week workshop focusing on ‘Capacity Building in Combating Terrorism’, will be held from Monday, March 31 to Friday, April 4, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, in an attempt to improve the criminal justice system.
According to the Director of the Justice Training Institute, Audrey Sewell, “this workshop means that we will build the human capacity of the criminal justice system to strengthen the international fight against terrorism.”
“We want to minimize the incidences of terrorism and we want to know that as a region and as a country we would be pro-active to take measures to prevent occurrences in Jamaica,” Mrs. Sewell explained during an interview with JIS News.
The five-day workshop is expected to host approximately 40 participants, comprising 25 persons from Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize and Grenada, and 15 Jamaicans.
The local participants will be drawn from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Port Security Corps, the Jamaica Customs Department, the Financial Investigation Division, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Ministry of National Security
Mrs. Sewell explained that the workshop would equip the relevant persons with the requisite skills to effectively address the issue.
“It’s really intended to equip law enforcement officers and other relevant persons in the region with the required skills and competences to really combat terrorism, and so it is geared to train persons to detect, prevent, investigate, and prosecute persons involved in terrorism,” she noted.
The workshop, which starts 8:30 a.m. daily, will focus on areas, such as international and regional initiatives, human rights and legal issues in terrorism cases; terrorism financing and intelligence; investigation of terrorist acts; Interpol and border control; and working with the media, and handling hostage cases.
The workshop is funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Canadian Government, and the Ministry of Justice.
