The Full Story

Ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) involved in the production and dissemination of statistics will participate in a workshop from July 18 to 20 at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St. Andrew.

Spearheaded by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN), the three-day event will also include persons from academia, the private sector and other major users of statistics.

A key objective of the workshop is to discuss matters and concerns relating to the preparation of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) for Jamaica.

The NSDS will facilitate greater harmonisation among agencies that produce statistics, reduce duplication, and enable the national statistical system to better respond to the increased demand for information.

“This workshop will see us collaborating to develop the strategy, discuss and work on what it is that we need to do; (and) examine the shortcomings, the financial needs and the capacity development needs of the production of statistics across agencies,” Director General of STATIN, Carol Coy, highlighted at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on July 7.

She explained that the intention is to get all the stakeholders in statistics together and look at the issues of quality, standardisation and dissemination – all integral to moving forward with the development of the national strategy.

Miss Coy informed that the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) and Open Data Watch, two major bodies with expertise in the production and dissemination of statistics, will be participating in the workshop.

“So PARIS21 will be leading the workshop and will be providing an overview to MDAs on what a national strategy for development of statistics looks like,” the Director General said.

In preparation for the workshop, Miss Coy said that STATIN, with assistance from PARIS21, conducted a survey of a sample of MDAs to assess their data collection and sharing procedures.

“So, we were looking at issues such as where do they get their data, why do they do the statistics, if they have a mandate to produce the statistics, some of the capabilities they have in producing the statistics and if they follow international standards,” Miss Coy highlighted.

She informed that the findings from the survey/assessment will be released at the workshop, highlighting both the strong points and weaknesses among data producers.

The session to be conducted by the Open Data Watch group will involve the assessment of dissemination practices among the MDAs.

Miss Coy added that the workshop will also highlight the best practices of STATIN, Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), and the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.
