Workshop for Arbitrators March 28

The Dispute Resolution Foundation and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Caribbean Chapter, will host the inaugural workshop for certifying Arbitrators as Associates of the Chartered Institute. The workshop will be held on March 28 at the Courtleigh Hotel in Kingston.
According to Donna Parchment, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Foundation, the one-day workshop would provide a unique opportunity to tap into international markets.
“This will open the door for us to be given work that will come to the Chartered Institute from any place in the world, so no longer would we be looking at simply doing arbitration of matters in Jamaica or even in the Caribbean. We would be looking to have our Caribbean members doing work in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa where opportunities arise,” she explained in an interview with JIS News. Miss Parchment also noted that one of the most important commitments of the Foundation is “to facilitate the training process to enable persons to become associates, members and fellows of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.”
To fulfill this commitment, she is appealing to members of the public and private sectors to participate in the workshop, as there is a demand for competent and certified arbitrators who are supported by a credible and respected organization with global clout.
“Jamaica is now in the landscape of the Caribbean Single Market and the European Partnership Agreement. We have a significant amount of foreign direct investments and this is in a Jamaican and regional context and so we are targeting persons who want to be part of an international network of attorneys, engineers, quantity surveyors, bankers and certified mediators, who want to add another area of competence to their skill base,” she explained.
“The global village is shrinking and the recognition of competence is what drives our participation in a number of spheres and makes it a great opportunity for Jamaicans to be part of the international community that deals with disputes,” she added. Meanwhile, Convenor of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Caribbean Chapter, John Bassie emphasized that the one-day workshop would provide the successful candidates with the basic tools to conduct arbitration and the basic skills to build on it.
He told JIS News that participants in the workshop would be provided with information on international commercial arbitration, which would, in time, benefit the country and the region.
The workshop will cater to at least 25 persons at a cost of US$200, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The workshop will be conducted by Jeffrey Philip Elkinson, renowned Arbitrator and Mediator and Mr. Bassie.
