Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies, has announced that the Ministry, through the Road Maintenance Fund, has approved an allocation of an additional $100 million to the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP) Secretariat, for the eradication of mosquito breeding sites.

This amount is in addition to $200 million already allocated to JEEP by the Ministry of Health for clean-up of the nation’s major gullies and drains, to boost the country’s resilience against the threat of the Zika Virus (ZikV).

Dr. Davies gave details of the allocation at a signing ceremony at the Ministry’s head office on Thursday (February 4), for a contract for the rehabilitation of  Marcus Garvey Drive, in Kingston.

He said the National Works Agency (NWA) will be involved in this programme and will start clean-up activity this weekend, following consultations in several communities. The work will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development and the Members of Parliament.

“The Ministry of Health and the JEEP Secretariat will be working together with the NWA in identifying the main trouble spots,” he said.

Dr. Davies noted that the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing started a vector control programme late last year with assistance from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and targeted several communities in the parishes of St. Thomas, St. Andrew and Clarendon.
