Workers’ Week and Labour Day 2010 to be Launched at Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre on Thursday

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange will officially launch Workers’ Week and Labour Day 2010 at a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, April 29 at the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre in Kingston.
Worker’s Week, which begins on May 16, will culminate with Labour Day on Monday, May 24 under the theme: ‘Our Children .Show them we Care’.
This year’s launch, which will get underway at 7:15 a.m., will include the participation of children, who will march from the Half-Way-Tree clock to the Transport Centre. They will be accompanied by mascots and trumpeters while holding signs bearing messages from the theme, which will call the nation to action for Labour Day.
At the ceremony, Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Mike Henry, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
Other speakers include the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles; State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Local Government, Hon. Robert Montague; Children’s Advocate, Mrs. Mary Clarke; Opposition Spokesperson on Youth, Miss Lisa Hanna; and Representative of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, Mr. Danny Roberts.
Speaking at a recent National Labour Day Planning Committee meeting held at Jamaica House, Minister Grange said that the theme was timely considering “all the issues that have affected our children in recent times.”
She said that this year people will be encouraged to demonstrate care and support for children by complementing the usual physical works with activities that target the mental and social development of children.
