The Full Story

The bauxite and alumina company, WINDALCo, has been assisting with the development of sports in the island, by sponsoring an under 12 cricket competition for preparatory and primary schools in St. Catherine.
“We want to develop young cricket talent in St. Catherine, both male and female,” Venton Brown, Employee Community Relations Officer for WINDALCo at the Ewarton plant in the parish, told JIS News.
“We are focussing on the under 12 age group as we believe it is important for them to learn the rudiments of the game from an early age,” he added.
The final of this year’s competition was played recently at the Orangefield sports complex in St. Catherine, where Polly Ground Primary School was victorious over Jericho Primary School.
Mr. Brown told JIS News that the competition, now in its fourth year, had surpassed expectations, especially with the involvement of girls.
“We have had four females coming out of this competition who played for Jamaica’s under 19 cricket team last year, and we have Rosanna Outar who has gone on to play with the national team in the West Indies women’s competition,” he noted.
Director of Operations at WINDALCo’s Ewarton refinery, Delroy Dell told JIS News that he hoped the young persons participating in the competition would have adopted and reinforced in their daily lives, virtues of discipline, good citizenship and teamwork. “Teachers and coaches must be commended as they have gone to great lengths to ensure that the competition was successful,” he said, adding that every participant was a winner.
