Eighty-four employees of the West Indies Alumina Company (WINDALCo) were recently honoured for long and meritorious service at a special awards banquet held at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach and Villa resort.
Managing Director for WINDALCo, Gabriel Henn, congratulated the recipients for the loyalty they had exhibited over the years. “This occasion is the number one social event in the WINDALCo calendar and its all about you so enjoy it, you have seen a lot of changes over the years and come through them all – both good times and tougher times,” he said.
Mr. Henn noted that in terms of the company’s performance, 2006 had been a mixed year with many positives. “We have had in Ewarton probably its best year ever with continuing production increases and efficiency improvements and this is a testament of the excellent performance of everyone here,” he said.
The Managing Director explained that the year had seen significant capital investment on the part of the stakeholders. “You can see it reflected in the expansion projects and the commencement of the new haul road to replace the ropeway in Ewarton,” he said.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Jamaica Employers’ Federation, Jacqueline Coke-Lloyd, who was the guest speaker for the event, commended the company.
“I am honoured to be addressing individuals who have given 15 to 25 years of service to .a company that has overcome many obstacles over the past two years and which holds the record for best land reclamation and restoration, having won the trophy six out of seven years,” she said.
Mrs. Coke-Lloyd noted that the company had scored many first time achievements. “You were the first in Jamaica to be accredited to the ISO14001 1996 Environmental Management System (EMS) standard and this year you successfully passed the recertification audit,” she said.
She stressed that these accomplishments could only have come about as a result of the strong emphasis placed on excellence.
Carpenter, Jolly Wright, who was awarded for 15 years of service, told JIS News that he appreciated what was being done by for its employees.
“After working so long for the company this is really good and exciting,” he said.
Another employee, Wavel Dale, said “I have lasted so long (at the company) because of the high levels of cooperation that exists between the various teams that make up the company, especially from the Human Resource department, as well as the security department, which I have the pleasure of leading”.
Mr. Dale indicated that although there had been many challenges over the years, there had also been many opportunities for him at the company. “Overall it has been wonderful, as the challenges only help to make you stronger”.
