The Full Story

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) is to spend $24 million to upgrade the water supply system serving the communities of Shotover, Ranch Hill and Stony Hill in Portland.
An agreement for the project was signed by JSIF and the Benevolent Society representing the communities, in the district of Norwich in Portland on Wednesday, May 15.
Under the agreement, the project will be implemented in two segments simultaneously, with one being carried out fully by the benevolent society at a cost of $10 million.
The other, which will value $14 million will be implemented by JSIF, which will also undertake the responsibility of securing the services of a contractor for that phase.
Work on the project is expected to commence within the next two weeks and completion is set for January of next year.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of JSIF, Scarlette Gillings said the project was one of several similar ventures which had received assistance from the organization.
She said the willingness to give that assistance was as a result of the recognition that access to reliable and clean water was of critical importance to personal and national development.
Mrs. Gillings noted that Jamaica was a signatory to the United Nations Millennium Development goal of halving the number of persons living in poverty worldwide, and reducing the number of persons worldwide without access to potable water was integral to achieving that goal. She added that JSIF is positioned to play an important role in achieving that objective locally.
Congratulating members of the Benevolent Society for the contribution they have made in the effort to make the project a reality, Mrs. Gillings urged them to work hard to ensure that it is completed on time and within budget.
