Water Resources Master Plan to be Presented to Cabinet by June 30

Minister of State for Housing, Water, Transport and Works, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, has said that the Water Resources Master Plan should be completed and presented to Cabinet by June 30.
The State Minister, who made the announcement on Wednesday (June 6) during his contribution to the 2007/08 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, informed that this plan will provide the inventories to guide the allocation of water, to increase access to safe water for all citizens as set out in the National Water Policy and the framework for the integrated management of the island’s water resources.
The Master Plan will, in addition, identify the objectives for the development, conservation and use of water resources, while considering the protection of health and the environment; describe and record the occurrence, quantity, quality, availability and current uses of water; and identify and describe the projected water demands; and make recommendations for action to be taken to meet the Government’s development policy.
“No other Caribbean country has a Water Resources Master Plan and within this hemisphere, only Brazil has recently developed a similar plan,” Dr. Ferguson pointed out.
The plan is being developed by the Water Resources Authority (WRA) through funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
