The Full Story

The historic Ward Theatre, situated downtown Kingston, is to be renovated, Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, has announced.
“The Ward Theatre is on stream for the refurbishing that it needs to bring it back to the glory days and beyond,” Mr. Bartlett said during a post-Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House on June 11.
He said that the California-based Paramount Studios has expressed interest in carrying out work on the building and contacts at the studio “will be in touch with us later on through the Jamaica Consulate in New York, to twin with the Ward so that serious funds can be raised for (Ward Theatre) to complete their restoration project to coincide with their 100th anniversary in 2012.”
According to the Minister, Paramount Studios has done “some remarkable work in the restoration of antique structures and buildings and have renovated old theatres that have historic value.”
The Ward Theatre was presented as a gift to the city of Kingston in 1912 by Colonel Charles James Ward, the then Custos of Kingston. The theatre is the largest in the English-speaking Caribbean and is an important cultural monument, where many local and international musicals and dance performances have been held.
