Voucher System Established for Relief Supplies

September 16, 2004

The Full Story

A voucher system is being established to facilitate the distribution of relief supplies in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
Still in the development phase, the idea is to supply persons with a “food-stamp like voucher”, to which is attached a monetary value that can be exchanged for food and other supplies at merchants across the island.
Addressing the JIS weekly ‘Think Tank’ on September 15, Nadene Newsome, Director of Information and Training at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), said that the vouchers could only be redeemed after the registration process.
Elaborating on the registration process, Miss Newsome said that it entailed persons recording the level of damage to their houses and property. The verification of the information would subsequently be conducted. “You will be then granted whatever you are eligible for,” she added.
Persons are being urged to visit registration centres, which are currently being established across the island in every parish.
They are also being advised to check with their parish disaster co-ordinators or at the parish council office, to locate the registration centres in their areas. “Feel free to walk in and record your information,” Miss Newsome said.
Currently, agreements are in place with a number of retailers, and a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Welfare and Relief sub-committee of the National Disaster Committee and large hardware merchants for them to recognize and accept these vouchers.
