About 60 volunteers from Sligoville in St. Catherine will participate in the patching of potholes on the Waugh Hill road in the community on Labour Day (Monday, May 23).
The Day is being observed under the theme: ‘Prepare for Disaster, Recover Faster’.
Co-ordinator for the Labour Day activities, Rosemarie Greene told JIS News that the road was being repaired because it is located in front of the Community Centre and Basic School, and the potholes hampered the free movement of pedestrians and motorists.
“I see a need in the community for action and to help people to help themselves,” she added.
Miss Greene said that work on the road would continue after Labour Day in order to complete the project. She pointed out that financing of the project would be undertaken jointly by community members and the business community. She noted that materials would be provided by Innovative Asphalt Repairs Limited and Reid Construction Limited, with equipment and materials such as marl and cement being given by other companies in the parish.
“This is a good example of a partnership between the private sector and the community,” she said. Miss Greene said members of the Sligoville Senior Citizens Club have offered to provide meals for the workers on Labour Day.
Some 65 projects have been registered in the parish, the majority of which are community projects.
