The Full Story

Vital statistics collated by the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) are now available to stakeholders in an online electronic database developed by the agency, according to Dr. Patricia Holness, Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
“Stakeholders with relevant passwords and access codes will be able to log on to www.rgd.gov.jmand access a central database of vital statistics, which will enable them to request the information in a wide range of formats, specific to their research needs,” the CEO told guests at the agency’s eighth Annual Prayer Breakfast held recently at Twickenham Park, St. Catherine.
Some of the main stakeholders include local representatives of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Health Organisation (WHO), and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), as well as the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
Dr. Holness said this recent development would serve to improve the RGD’s efforts in fulfilling its mandate of providing vital statistics to support national planning. The new database, she said, would assist the agency in producing an accurate and timely vital statistics report.
As the country’s primary record-keeping agency, the RGD has a responsibility to provide evidence of every birth, death, adoption, marriage and stillbirth in Jamaica and Jamaican waters.
“This evidence collected from Local District Registrar Offices islandwide is collated and used to prepare our annual vital statistics reports,” she explained.
According to Dr. Holness, the RGD’s computerization efforts have always had its focus on the satisfaction of all its customers.
Meanwhile, the CEO also noted that the RGD was now accepting debit and credit cards at all of its offices.
Although the agency has not yet achieved full computerization, it continues to make several strides in this area.
