June 17, 2009

The Full Story

Jamaicans can now access important energy statistics at the Ministry of Energy and Mining’s website www.men.gov.jm. The statistics were mounted on the website on Tuesday June 16, 2009.
Spanning the period 2004 – 2008, the statistics will provide information on: 1) Jamaica’s Total Petroleum Imports 2) Petroleum Prices for Selected Products (J$/Litre), 3) Jamaica’s Petroleum Consumption by Product, 4) Jamaica’s Petroleum Consumption by Activity and 5) Jamaica’s Total Alternative Energy Consumption. According to Senior Economist in the Ministry’s Energy Economics and Planning Unit, Omar Alcock, these statistics are frequently requested by persons conducting research or in need of energy data for general use. “Having the statistics posted on the website will greatly enhance the Unit’s ability to respond to requests for information and would also readily provide information to persons who search the website in need of related energy data,” Mr. Alcock explained.
Continuing, he said that “an energy literate population is important to the achievement of the Ministry’s objectives and so we want to encourage Jamaicans to utilise this facility as it will help them to develop a better understanding of some of the issues in the energy sector, enabling them to have informed discussions on energy related matters.”
