Vilma McNish named as Ambassador to Belgium & the EU

Senator, the Hon. AJ Nicholson announces the appointment of Ambassador Vilma McNish as Jamaica’s new Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union and permanent delegate to UNESCO.

This will be Ambassador McNish’s second posting as Head of Mission, having served as Ambassador of Jamaica to Mexico from 2001-2005. During that time, she was also accredited to countries in Central America and was High Commissioner to Belize.

Currently, Ambassador McNish is the Ministry’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs.

A career Foreign Service Officer, with over twenty-five years experience, Ambassador McNish was Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Washington (1998-2001).

Prior to her posting to the OAS, Ambassador McNish was Assistant Director in the Political Division and Director of the Multilateral Organizations Department. She was also Jamaica’s Deputy High Commissioner in Ottawa and Counsellor in the Embassy of Jamaica in Venezuela.

Ambassador McNish has represented Jamaica in numerous bilateral, regional and international meetings and conferences of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); the Association of Caribbean States; the United Nations; the OAS; the Non-Aligned Movement; the Group of 77 and China and the Commonwealth, among others.

The Ambassador, who has lectured in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI), has a B.Sc in International Relations from the institution and an M.A. in International Affairs from the Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

Ambassador McNish is expected to assume duties in April, 2012.
