The Full Story

Jamaica’s sprint queen, Veronica Campbell will head a field of world class athletes to compete at an international meet in New York City on Saturday, June 11, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Miss Campbell, who won two gold and one bronze medals at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, will compete at the Reebok Grand Prix, the first international competition to be held at the new Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, just outside Harlem. The meet marks the return of world class outdoor competition in Track and Field athletics to the East Coast.
“New Yorkers are among some of the greatest sports fans in the world and with the support of Reebok, we plan to provide them with some of the best track and field action in the world,” Mark Wetmore, Meet Director and President of Global Athletics and Marketing Inc. told JIS News.
Miss Campbell, the 2004 Carreras Sportswoman of the Year, is considered the top current female sprinter in the world at 100 metres and 200 metres. She will compete in the 100 metres at the meet, and following her world best 10.96 seconds first place clocking at the Adidas Track Classic in California last weekend, she is expected to win.
The new Icahn Stadium, which has replaced Downing Stadium, sits on a 480-acre park anchoring Manhattan, Queens and Bronx. It offers a standard Olympic sized 400-metre running track, flanked by covered spectator seating on both sides.
The Reebok Grand Prix meet is the fifth stop of the USA Track and Field Visa Championship Series.
