October 15, 2004

The Full Story

Approximately 60 Venezuelan soldiers have taken up residence in a camp in Brighton, Westmoreland, to help in reconstruction efforts in that community and in the neighbouring parish of St. Elizabeth.
This was disclosed by Communications Liaison in the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), Tracey Hamilton, in an interview with JIS News.
Miss Hamilton said that the Venezuelans would be working to restore dwellings and replace roofs on homes in Brighton, and schools in St. Elizabeth.
The Venezuelans who took their own heavy duty equipment, have also brought all the building materials they will be using to expedite repairs and the refurbishing of the properties.
Additionally, there has been more progress in terms of funds collection. On Tuesday, October 11, mobile service provider, Digicel handed over its first contribution of $50 million to the ONR. This represents a quarter of the committed $200 million pledged by the telecommunications company.
