The Full Story

The Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) will be working with the law faculty at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) to offer a graduate programme in Intellectual Property (IP), as well as related training courses and summer programmes.

The initiative is being taken in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Worldwide Academy.

State Minister for Industry, Investment and Commerce, Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, made the announcement in her contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, June 25.

She noted that the Mona law school is the only institution offering a course on IP and the creative industries to participants from all over the world, making Jamaica a global hub for IP and the creative industries.

“From a local perspective, these courses will support the development of a curricula based on the development goals of Jamaica, targeting a wide cross section of creative individuals, craft persons, designers, musicians, graphic artists, and entertainers. The aim is to equip and empower creative persons with the skills to hone and manage their talents for wealth creation. Creativity is what Jamaica is renowned for. We must make it earn for us,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the State Minister said that in response to the needs of the creative sector for greater security in the registration of copyright works, JIPO will be introducing a voluntary copyright registration system for all copyright works in digital format.

“This purely digital system will be the first of its kind in the world. Presently, the system is being offered free of cost for a period of six months to students and teachers of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Later this year, it will be opened to the general public,” she informed.
