UWI Nurses to Stage Health Expo

July 22, 2009

The Full Story

The St. Andrew “A” group of nurses of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) will, on Thursday (July 23), stage a Nurses’ Expo and Exhibition, in the main car park of the hospital.
The event, which will get underway at 10:30 a.m., will highlight the important role played by nurses in providing children and families with the highest quality care.
Acting Senior Director of Nursing at the UHWI, Claudette James, told JIS News that the exposition is one of the activities planned by the St. Andrew “A” group to observe National Nurses Week.
“Each group of the Nurses’ Association of Jamaica (NAJ) embarks on individual activities for Nurses’ Week, and this expo is just one of the activities that the St. Andrew “A” group will be doing,” she explained.
The event will be held under the theme: ‘Delivering Quality, Serving Communities – Nurses Leading Care Innovation,’ which is also the theme for National Nurses Week.
It will feature innovations introduced by nurses throughout the years to address the health needs of Jamaicans, while display booths will showcase specialist areas including critical or intensive care, neonatal intensive care, haemodialysis, public health, paediatric care, among others. Several pharmaceutical companies will also be making presentations throughout the day.
“In those booths, you’ll have nurses and persons, who work in those areas, who’ll be able to talk to you about how their area functions, their roles and responsibilities,” explained Clinical Nurse Manager of the UHWI and Chair of the Planning Committee, Dionne Murphy.
She told JIS News that the exposition will focus more on the care innovations that have been introduced in nursing, particularly at the hospital.
“The Nurses’ Week theme speaks to care innovations, and we have realised that it is seldom recognised or publicised, hence the expo to showcase that aspect of the theme”, she pointed out.
The event will target student nurses, registered nurses from other hospitals, patients of the UHWI, who are able to participate and members of the public. Admission is free.
A special feature of the exposition will be the presentation of the Nurse of the Month Award, to an outstanding nurse at the hospital. The award will be presented by the UHWI management in collaboration with the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS).
