The University of the West Indies (UWI) Alumni Association, Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Branch in the USA, will mark its 20th Anniversary with a service of thanksgiving on June 28, at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, downtown Washington, D.C.
Members of the Caribbean Diplomatic Corps, representatives of various universities in the Baltimore and Washington, DC metropolitan areas, as well as the alumni members are expected to attend the service.
The guest speaker will be Vice Chancellor of the UWI, E. Nigel Harris, while Chancellor of the UWI, Sir George Alleyne, and Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson, will bring greetings.
The UWI Alumni Association of Washington, D.C., was formed in January 1989, under the dynamic leadership of Cecile Clayton, with the aim of bringing together the graduates in the greater Washington metropolitan area, particularly those who were not in the medical profession.
According to the Association President, ShaShana Crichton, since its inception the membership has focussed on providing annual scholarships for needy students at UWI campuses. “Our goal is to continue our pledge to uphold the ideals and goals of our alma mater to ensure UWI’s place as a Caribbean education icon, and as a catalyst for Caribbean development and leadership,” the President said.
Founding members of the Association include Sir George Alleyne and Lady Alleyne, Barbara Brissett, Rayness Mayne, Rudolph Smith, Dr. Michael Alleyne and Dr. Kortright Davis. Past Presidents include Dr. Michael Alleyne, Sonia Suberan, Stewart Daley, Yasmin Anderson Smith and Dr. Franklin Knight.
