US$20,000 Donated to Caribbean Hurricane Recovery Effort

WSRF-AM 1580, a Jamaican-owned radio station in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has donated over US$20,000 to the Caribbean hurricane recovery effort.
The money was raised from a radiothon held over two days last October and saw donations coming in from listeners throughout the United States.
The funds were equally distributed among four Caribbean islands – Jamaica, Grenada, Cayman Islands and Haiti.
Andre Egglettion and Lynda Hudson of WSRF radio, made the presentation of cheques to Consuls General representing the respective countries at a ceremony held at the Lauderdale Lakes City Commission in Fort Lauderdale on January 25.
They expressed the hope that the donation would provide comfort and consolation to those in need.Jamaica’s Consul General to Southeastern United States, Ricardo Allicock, who also chairs the CARICOM Consular Corps in South Florida, thanked the radio station for the donation, noting that the fund raising effort spoke to the deep affinity that existed between South Florida and its Caribbean neighbours.
Mr. Allicock also praised the efforts of the many donors, whom he said, had taken the time to consider the plight of those less fortunate in the Caribbean even as Florida faced its own challenges during the active hurricane season last year.
Other Consular representatives echoed similar sentiments, noting that the assistance to the region demonstrated a “true spirit of community outreach.”
The South Florida region has one of the largest population of immigrants from the Caribbean region to the United States.
