UN to Host Exhibition on Slave Trade

Caribbean Americans will be given an opportunity to reflect on the tragedies and triumphs of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in the form of an exhibition in the visitors lobby at the United Nations headquarters at 46th Street & First Avenue, Manhattan.
The exhibition, which traces the journey of the ships that transported human cargo (slaves) from Africa to the West Indies, will be officially opened on March 1 and will last until March 30, 2007.
It will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the trans-atlantic trade in slaves and is being supported by the permanent missions of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and India to the United Nations, with assistance from the United Nations Department for Public Information, the Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture and the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Ariel Bowen, First Secretary of Jamaica’s Permanent Mission to the UN and a key architect of the proposal to have March 26 observed worldwide as the official anniversary day of the abolition, said that the exhibition would kick start a series of events and meetings culminating in the bigger celebration on March 26 at UN headquarters.
The theme of the exhibition is: ‘Lest we forget – the triumph over slavery’. The exhibition will be open to the public during regular business hours of the United Nations.
