UK Diaspora Says Farewell to Air Jamaica Staff

The Full Story

The Jamaican community in London last Friday (Sept. 28) bade farewell to the staff of Air Jamaica, at a special dinner arranged by the Jamaican Diaspora United Kingdom (UK) and the Jamaican High Commission.
Tributes were paid to the more than 20 members of staff for their outstanding service to the Jamaican community.
“Air Jamaica has been very supportive of the Jamaican community and despite the challenges, have done a good job, so the community wanted to show our gratitude and say ‘thank you’ to the Air Jamaica staff,” said Jamaica Diaspora Representative, Travis Johnson.
For the second time in its history, Air Jamaica will no longer fly to the UK. Last year, Air Jamaica marked the 10th anniversary of its return to the market.
Citing heavy operational losses, the airline earlier this year, announced that it will end its London service at the end of October.
Air Jamaica’s Vice-President for Sales, George DeMercado, said that the airline expected to have a code-sharing arrangement with Virgin Atlantic for the Kingston/London route, and the UK community should continue to receive good service.
High Commissioner, Burchell Whiteman, thanked the Air Jamaica staff for a job well done. “We are here with mixed emotions, paying tribute to some very fine people who have done an excellent job. The Air Jamaica staff has been fine representatives for Jamaica operating in a very challenging and demanding environment,” he said.
The High Commissioner told the audience that although Air Jamaica will no longer fly to the UK, the airline had not folded and continues to do well on its other routes.
He said that like Air Jamaica, the country will continue to soar to new heights, despite the challenges presented by events such as Hurricane Dean.
