UAF Gets $1.5 Billion

The Universal Access Fund Company (UAF) has been assisted with the provision of $1.5 billion to facilitate the e-learning project.
This has been made available in the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
The company was incorporated on May 18, 2005 in accordance with the Telecommunications Act of 2000 and started operations on June 1, 2005.
The UAF, is a subsidiary of the Spectrum Management Authority and is a telecommunication regulator. The company was set up to collect and manage the service levy from telecommunication companies on all international calls terminating in Jamaica.
Its core functions and duties are: collecting the universal telecommunications service levy from telecommunication companies; analyzing projects and making recommendations to Cabinet for approval for funding; disbursing funds for implementation of approved initiatives; and monitoring project implementation.
