February 14, 2007

The Full Story

‘Brand Trelawny Expo’, a two-day festival showcasing the best of the parish in terms of food, culture, music and industries, will be held at the historic Water Square in Falmouth from March 10 to 11.
The celebration is slated to coincide with the parish’s hosting of the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) including warm up matches from March 5 to 9, and the official opening ceremony on March 11. The staging of Trelawny homecoming activities from March 4 to 12, will also feed into the event.
Over the two days, the 18th century commercial capital will be transformed into a cultural hub, buzzing with exciting activities and non-stop entertainment, with some 60 booths showcasing art and craft, farm produce and project development plans, which are designed to bring Trelawny to its full potential. Speaking at the launch held yesterday (Feb. 13) at the Star Fish Hotel in the parish, Executive Director of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the ICC CWC, Robert Bryan, commended the planning committee for the tremendous effort demonstrated in planning for the event, and the cricket tournament.
“I believe that the Cricket World Cup is not so much about cricket, it is fundamentally about Jamaica. This event presents to us as a country and as a people, the biggest stage to show the world who we are, our culture, our people, our outstanding achievements, our sportsmen and women, our business leaders and all of the aspirations we have as a country. For us, this is an opportunity we should not miss or take for granted,” he stated.
“I believe that indeed Trelawny is in the game and the game that you are in is the game that will outlast the cricket. This will lay the foundation for our children and grandchildren to continue playing and that game is to focus on the development of this wonderful country and its brand,” he added.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Cable and Wireless Jamaica, Rodney Davis, in announcing his company’s sponsorship of the event, expressed pride in being “one of the first organizations to have answered the call by making a significant financial commitment to assist the LOC in its efforts to prepare Jamaica for the staging of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007. Brand Trelawny is no accident. It is the result of strategic planning and execution”.
He further congratulated the organizers noting that, “it is clear that the citizens of this vibrant parish have decided that this once in a lifetime opportunity cannot pass by and not redound to the present and future benefits for their communities. You have literally stepped up your game to ensure that your parish reaps a lasting legacy from this spectacular event”.
