The Full Story

Minister of Water and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, has expressed pleasure that the Twickenham Park Housing Development, Phase II, is to be completed in June, five months ahead of schedule.
The Minister toured the development in St. Catherine, today (April 21), to see the progress of the work and view the already completed units. The project consists of 234 two-bedroom townhouses and two and three bedroom apartments, most of which have been set aside for public sector workers.
Dr. Chang noted that the project is one of the steps the Government is taking to provide more affordable houses for Jamaicans.

The development is in the final stages of construction and is expected to be completed in June.

“Affordable homes have become almost non-existent over the last 20 years or so. Because of the inflation and reduced buying power of many of our workers, you find a large block of our working population cannot look to buy a new home in an organised community,” he said.
He pointed out that this has resulted in the formation of many informal settlements across Jamaica as well as well as the urban decay that is present in several cities.
The Minister said that while the National Housing Trust (NHT) is seeking to build more affordable houses, private developers are also being encouraged to enter the low-income housing market.
Dr. Chang also gave the Government’s commitment to find solutions to the housing problems faced by persons who live in rural and inner-city areas, who might not be contributors to the NHT.

The Minister was on tour of the project which is in the final stages of construction and is expected to be completed in June. Looking on is Project Director at M&M Jamaica Limited, Mr. Christopher Smith.

“We don’t yet have the entire solution to that, but we will be working on a number of projects over the next 18 months to see how we can deal with those,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the NHT, Mr. Howard Mitchell, congratulated the contractors, M&M Jamaica Limited, for carrying out the project on budget and ahead of schedule.
The project began in November 2008 and is aimed primarily at providing affordable housing for public sector workers. The townhouses are expected to be priced at approximately $7 million, the three-bedroom apartments for about $6 million and the two-bedroom apartments for about $5 million.
