Troubled Youngsters Graduate from Skills Training Course

Approximately 10 young men from the Hill Top Juvenile Correctional Centre in St. Ann were recently presented with certificates of achievement and tool kits, having successfully completed a 10-week electrical installation course.
The course was sponsored by the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League and accredited by the HEART TRUST/NTA.
“The wards were able to gain hands-on experience in training as they sought to become productive members of society,” Electrical Installation Instructor at the centre, Garrett Needham has said.
He noted that the facility had, over the years, benefited from assistance from the Credit Union League, including the equipping of the facility at the cost of over $500,000.
Meanwhile, Mr. Needham informed, the instructors had completed the “trainer of trainers” course offered by the HEART/NTA and had received certificates of completion.
He mentioned that the recent hurricane had damaged the workshop, causing setbacks in the electrical installation programme, but “the wards were still being exposed to academic and vocational training and effective teaching and learning were taking place.”
He appealed to the youth at Hill Top and Jamaica at large, to think positive and strive to be the best they could be and, to make education their first priority.
“Stay in school, stay away from crime and help to build a better Jamaica by being productive members of society,” he encouraged them.
