Tribute to Professor Gladstone Mills, OJ from Prime Minister the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson

The Prime Minister, the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson, has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Professor Gladstone E. Mills, former Professor of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the first Chairman of the Electoral Advisory Committee.
The Prime Minister said that the passing of this distinguished son of Jamaica was a tremendous loss, but comfort could be taken from the fact that his contribution to national life was towering and extremely significant to the nation building process.
“His Chairmanship of the EAC, in particular, laid the foundation for the present electoral system, which has been acknowledged as the best the country has ever had. His approach was indeed the epitome of fairness and balance, underpinned with institutional capacity building, which would ensure the sustainability of the work of the EAC,” the Prime Minister stated.
“As a distinguished Professor of Public Administration, he prepared many generations of Public Servants,” Mr. Patterson pointed out, and said that, “Building on his early experience in Jamaica’s modern Civil Service, he can truly be said to be one of the foremost architects and a pioneer of our hallowed traditions, of independence and impartiality which is well regarded.”
Mr. Patterson also noted that, “beyond his own academic work Professor Mills served for many years as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and thereby contributed to the building of the university community as a whole.”
The Prime Minister expressed his condolence to Professor Mills’ family along with his prayers and best wishes during this time of loss.
