Trelawny Fire Brigade Reports Success from Safety Programme

The fire safety public education programme implemented by the Trelawny Fire Brigade is achieving success in terms of reducing the incidence of fires in the parish, especially household fires.
Acting Deputy Superintendent Wethesean Lamont, in an operational report presented at the monthly meeting of the Trelawny Parish Council on Thursday (June 10), said that the division responded to 31 genuine fire calls in May, none of which were for house fires.
This compares favourably with the 59 genuine fire calls during the previous month, three of which were in connection to house blazes, which left seven persons homeless.
“Of the genuine fire calls received over the month, I am pleased to say we had no dwelling house fires, and I can attribute that to our community fire safety programme that we have going presently,” the Acting Deputy Superintendent stated.
He noted however that bush fires continue to be a concern. “Of the 31 genuine fires, most of them were bush fires. We have to start targeting farmers and other community groups to see if we can lower the problem in this area,” he stated.
He said the brigade responded to 24 calls for emergency medical service for the month, two of which were motor vehicle accidents from which one person died.
In the meantime, the Acting Deputy Superintendent said that the division will ensure that the cruise ship pier project in Falmouth meets the regulatory requirements in terms of fire safety.
