Transport Authority Expresses Concern At Commuter Survey

The Transport Authority (TA) is expressing concern about a commuter survey that was undertaken earlier this year.

The survey involved 363 persons, and 87 per cent of that number said they were aware of the risks associated with travelling on illegally operated public transportation (robots), yet they are prepared to take them.

Managing Director of the Transport Authority (TA), Donald Foster, said this is a “disturbing outcome,” as he addressed a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on December 9.

The survey formed the basis of a public education campaign by the public transport regulator, and was undertaken at six transport hubs in the Corporate Area.

Mr. Foster lamented the fact that commuters are still prepared to travel in illegal taxis, despite the risks.

“The majority of respondents are aware of the risks associated, including the fact that the vehicles have no public passenger vehicle insurance or licence and the knowledge that there would be little or no recourse in the event of an accident, yet they are still prepared to travel with the illegal operators,” he noted.

The survey also found that 28 per cent of those questioned indicated that even if legal transportation was adequate, they would continue to travel on illegal taxis.

Mr. Foster said this is unfortunate and implored commuters to exercise care when deciding on their mode of public transportation.

“My message to commuters is choose right and choose life.  Avoid taking robots, because you are compromising your own safety and security. I want to emphasise that when you take a robot, you are contributing to the illegality and indiscipline and the breakdown of law and order in the country. Take care of your lives and avoid taking illegal vehicles,” he cautioned.

‘Choose Right, Choose Life’, is the theme of the Transport Authority’s public education and communication campaign, aimed at educating the public on the risks associated with using illegal public transportation.
