Training Workshop for Teachers August 21-23

Leading Mathematics Expert from Singapore, Kelly Lim Kai Ling, will again headline presenters at the upcoming training workshop, ‘Amazing Mathematics Powers (AMP)…PRIMEd for Success’ to be held August 21 to 23 at the Shortwood Teachers’ College in Kingston.

Ms. Lim Kai Ling, a Scholastic Professional Development Specialist and lead PRIME Mathematics Trainer, will be joined by several local and regional PRIME trainers, including former Chief Education Officer from Barbados, Dr. Wendy Griffiths.

Chief Executive Officer for The Book Merchant Ltd (BML), Sharon Neita, told JIS News that the presenters would utilise the Scholastic PRIME Mathematics, a compilation of the best practices in Singapore, Republic of Korea and Hong Kong, which are three of the top-performing countries in mathematics.

Exposure to this methodology will involve focusing on critical thinking skills and less on drill and practice. This will translate into the development of creative and problem-solving skills in children.

“We see an urgent need to immerse our educators in best practices in teaching mathematics. The Book Merchant Limited has a long-standing history of investing in the capacity building of teachers and teaching quality through the provision of provisional development resources and teaching training programmes,” Mrs. Neita pointed out.

In addition to Mathematics training, there will be a literacy component to the three-day workshop this year. This will be delivered by renowned education consultant and lecturer at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Dr. Joan Spencer-Emandez, and Educator, Trainer and Senior Manager in Scholastic for Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, Mr. Miguel Melendez.

Popular Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at The UWI, Mona, Dr. Rose Johnson, will be on hand again this year to provide teachers with innovative strategies, which when utilised, bring about immediate behavioural change in students.

In the meantime, the initiative, which is now in its second year, is endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information.

Partnering with the BML are Shortwood Teachers’ College and the Jamaica Teaching Council.

Some 350 teachers from Jamaica and the Caribbean benefited from the training workshop at the first staging last year. This year, the organisers anticipate that some 600 educators from Jamaica and across the Caribbean will participate in the workshop.
