TPDCo Launches Adopt an Area Programme in Negril

The Tourism Development Company (TPDCo) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sandals and Riu Hotel chains for the maintenance of approximately two miles of verge along the Norman Manley Boulevard, in Negril, Westmoreland.
The signing took place at the launch of the Adopt An Area programme, in Negril on Friday (December 17) at the Norman Manley Sea Park. The programme is an initiative of the TPDCo and incorporates both private and public sector support to ensure sustainability.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Industry and Tourism, Aloun Ndombet Assamba described the occasion as a golden opportunity for corporate Jamaica to participate in activities, which involved the maintenance of a physical environment that Jamaica could be proud of.
“We have to admit, that a clean and pleasant environment is conducive to prosperity and progress, and in our efforts to secure the prosperity and progress of the tourism sector we must put measures in place to provide such an environment,” she stated, adding that, “the development of tourism extends beyond increasing rooms, human resource training and improving attractions. It also includes ensuring that the environment in which visitors enjoy these attraction is clean, safe and beautiful.”
She emphasized that the beautification and maintenance of public spaces influenced the way visitors saw the island and its citizens. Mrs. Assamba added that the project provided an excellent opportunity for more Jamaicans to see tourism at work, and benefit from the efforts of the players in the industry.
“With successful implementation in other areas, it has the potential to reshape Jamaica, to encourage the development of the spirit of patriotism and an overall pride in the preservation of a clean and healthy environment,” she said of the Adopt an Area programme.
Meanwhile State Minister and Member of Parliament for Western Westmoreland, Dr. Wykeham McNeil, expressed the hope that the importance of the MoU would become evident in years to come as it was of benefit not only to the Negril community. President of the Negril Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Cummings commended the initiative, pointing out that it would enhance every aspect of the Boulevard.
There are plans to introduce the programme next on the south coast, and then move on to the other resort areas.
