The Full Story

A tourism sensitization seminar, aimed at preparing Jamaicans for Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007, was hosted in Montego Bay on Thursday, February 22, by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo). Approximately 100 persons representing a wide cross section of the Montego Bay community participated.
According to TPDCo’s Executive Training Manager, Hugh Shim, the Montego Bay seminar was the fourth in a series being held across the island.
“We have held one in Alligator Pond, one in Trelawny, one in Port Antonio, this one, and we will be having one in Kingston on February 28,” he pointed out.
He explained that the idea of staging the seminars was born out of the expectations of the many persons scheduled to visit the island for the cricket world cup matches, adding that the meetings were geared at getting Jamaicans re-motivated and ready for tourism in general, and the Cricket World Cup in particular.
Mr. Shim said topics covered during the seminars included tourism awareness, customer service, sensitization for Cricket World Cup, with the targeted participants being persons who have to interact, in one way or another, with visitors to the island. He pointed out that the responses to the seminars have been “wonderful”.
“The special thing about these seminars is that they are not just straight lectures. They also involve educational theatre, featuring our Team Jamaica Tourism Ambassadors who are actually some of our instructors who come from all different walks of life in tourism and in education,” he added.
A participant at the Montego Bay seminar, Police Inspector, Edward Parkins, told JIS News that the sensitization seminar was very important.
“A lot of people do not understand the great importance of tourism, especially in Montego Bay, whereby on any given day we have more than 4,000 persons going to work within the hotel industry in this part of the country. Therefore, it is important for persons to understand clearly that their input is key,” he emphasised.
The Inspector suggested that the seminars should be taken to the inner city communities to involve the persons who benefit indirectly from the sector.
