Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, is upbeat about the prospects for the local tourism industry from his recent promotional trip to South America.
“The Chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and Director of Tourism, John Lynch, and I went on quite a trip in South America and we are pleased that the result is powerful, effective and forthcoming with numbers that will satisfy the cockles of all our (tourism) stakeholders in Jamaica,” he stated, while promising to reveal details of such numbers “in another few days.”
Minister Bartlett was addressing the official opening of Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) 2009 Monday night (May 11) at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Montego Bay St. James.
He underscored the importance of diversifying the tourism market to ensure a steady supply of visitors to the island.
“We believe that if we go South of the equator and North of the equator, then we will be able to have an all season flow of tourists in Jamaica, because somebody’s winter is always our summer,” he stated.
In the meantime, Minister Bartlett mentioned some incentives and concessions being implemented by the Government to help to strengthen the industry, “and give it the muscle to deal with the major challenges ahead and to take advantage of opportunities that will present themselves from time to time.”
