The Full Story

Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, left the United Kingdom on Thursday (Nov.15) for Spain, where he will hold talks with potential new investors in the tourism industry. The visit to Spain follows a strong showing by Jamaica at the four-day World Travel Market in London from November 12 to 15.
Minister Bartlett told JIS News that his visit to Spain is aimed at bringing in new investors to build more rooms and develop attractions. “A big part of this visit is going to be meeting with and discussing investment prospects for attractions as well as for accommodation. We are expecting to meet with some of the top accommodation providers out of Spain, some of those who have not yet come to Jamaica,” he informed.
He said the emphasis is on top-end investment “and we are scheduled to meet with at least three Spanish investors who will be looking for top-end investments in Jamaica. We will also be looking at health tourism and I am set to meet with the president of one of the largest health tourism providers, so we hope to meet to fine tune these arrangements,” he told JIS News.
Spanish hotel chains are already building some 13 new hotels in Jamaica at an estimated value of US$600 million.
In the meantime, Mr. Bartlett said the Ministry is looking at increasing the number of music festivals held in Jamaica, to bring more visitors to the island and to encourage them to spend more.
He said that in addition to the Jazz and Blues festival in winter and Sumfest in the summer, there is scope for other major festivals each year.”Jamaica has scope for four or five major festivals. We are talking to a group about a spring festival and looking for a fall (autumn) festival, but there is still scope for another summer festival as they help to bring heads to bed,” the Minister stated.
