Top cooks in Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann showed off their culinary skills while engaging in keen competition at the Regional Festival of Food held on Friday (April 24) at the St. Mary Sports Club in Annotto Bay.
Sponsored by the Northern Region of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), the event featured a culinary arts contest, with top chefs from the three parishes participating, a celebrity cook-off, and display of local cuisine including baked products and beverages.
During the celebrity cook-off, competitors were presented with “mystery baskets” of food stuff to prepare a meal. Among those participating in the contest were Mayor of Port Maria, Councillor Richard Creary; Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councillor Ivan Anderson; and Councillor Gloria Silvera of the Portland Parish Council.
Other competitive events included the napkin fold and table setting contests.
Regional Manager for the Northern Region of the JCDC, Marlene Pusey-Reid, said she was pleased with the strong turnout of residents from the three parishes. She commended the supporting organisations for the important role they have played in making the event a reality, and commended the participants for the high quality of the displays.
A number of government and private sector agencies including Coconut Industry Board, HEART/NTA, Rural Agricultural Development Authority, North Eastern Regional Health Authority, Jamaica Producers, Tru Juice, C.C. Bakery and Golden St. Mary Traders, mounted display booths at the event.
