Three Days of Mourning and Condolence Books to Open in Jamaica and Around the World for Herb McKenley


An official Period of Mourning of three days for sports icon the Honourable Herbert McKenley, OM, has been declared and Condolence Books opened for him here in Jamaica and abroad.
The Period of Mourning will start on Thursday, 6th December and end on the day of his funeral, Saturday, 8th December.
In Jamaica, the Condolence Books will also be opened for him for two days, Thursday 6th December and Friday, 7th December.
These Condolence Books are being placed at the headquarters of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA), the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), National Arena in Kingston; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in New Kingston; the Western Regional Office of the Prime Minister in Montego Bay; Calabar High School on Red Hills Road in St. Andrew and the Jamaica Labour Party Headquarters at Belmont Road in Kingston.
Signing will be between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.
Already Condolence Books have been opened at Jamaica’s 18 Foreign Missions around the world.
As the planning continues for Mr. McKenley’s Official Funeral, the Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee planning the Official Funeral, held an all-day meeting with her team on Friday 30th November which included site visits to National Heroes Park and the National Arena.
At National Heroes Park, the spot for Mr. McKenley’s grave was selected.
Persons attending the Official Funeral Service for Mr. McKenley should also note that a shuttle bus service will be available from the National Arena where the service will be held on Saturday, 8th December to National Heroes Park where he will be interred.
A wake at the National Arena on Friday night, 7th December is also planned for Mr. McKenley, generally considered to be the most accomplished athlete produced by Jamaica and among the best ever in the world.
He died on Monday night, 26th November at the age of 85 leaving behind Widow Beverley and four children.
