The Full Story

More than 8,000 Jamaicans and friends of the country, converged on the grounds of the Organization of American States (OAS), in downtown Washington, DC on August 3 to celebrate Jamaica’s 46th anniversary of Independence.
The occasion was the Independence Sunday Market, hosted by the Embassy of Jamaica.
The grounds of the OAS were converted into a grand market, with more than 30 booths showcasing a variety of Jamaican products, ranging from art and craft to cuisine.
Thousands of patrons were in attendance, including members of the United States Congress and Senate, the Washington diplomatic corps and Government, who danced to the sounds of Image, Bare Essentials, and Storm bands, while popular recording artistes Richie Stephens and General Degree, gave scintillating performances.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. Ronald Robinson, was also in attendance.
Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson, said the Sunday Market, was designed to “give Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica a taste of the island as we celebrate our 46 years of Independence with One Love, as One Family.” Ambassador Johnson commended the sponsors for their financial assistance in making the event possible.
The event was sponsored by the Development Bank of Jamaica, Jamaica National Building Society, Grace Foods, Jamaica Broilers Group, Bert Smith & Company, Red Stripe, J Wray & Nephew, Jamaica Tourist Board and Air Jamaica.
