The Harder They Come Breaks Record in London

The musical based on the classic Jamaican film, ‘The Harder They Come’, has returned to the Theatre Royal Stratford East for a second run.
The musical broke the Theatre Royal’s box office record last year, becoming the Theatre’s best-selling musical with the show running at an average of 94 per cent capacity. The Theatre Royal Stratford said the musical was returning by popular demand. It also received rave reviews in London.
Perry Henzell who was the co-writer and director of the original film adapted the show for the Stratford East. Mr. Henzell died on November 30 last year.
‘The Harder They Come’ features all the songs from the original film, many of which were written by Jimmy Cliff. British actor, Roland Bell is playing the part of Ivan, which was made famous by Mr. Cliff more than 30 years ago.
Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Burchell Whiteman met cast members and the production team of ‘The Harder They Come’, following a performance last week.
‘The Harder They Come’ tells the story of Ivan, the innocent Jamaican country boy who travels to the big city of Kingston to find fame and fortune as a reggae star. The original film became a worldwide audience hit.
